Adding SRV Records for Office 365

SRV (service) records are custom DNS records that connect a service to a hostname. This article explains what SRV records do and walks you through adding the two SRV records that Office 365 requires in the OpenSRS Reseller Control Panel.

About SRV records

When an application needs to find a specific service, it looks for a related SRV record. If it finds one, it reads the record to locate the service, using details such as:

  • Hostname
  • Ports
  • Priority and weight
  • IP addresses, if relevant

Before you begin

  • Use the correct nameservers. Point the domain to ns1.systemdns.com and ns2.systemdns.com. Copy over the complete zone file before switching nameservers.
  • Note the SRV limitation. OpenSRS does not currently support multiple SRV records that share the same subdomain.

Step 1: Open the DNS editor

  1. Sign in to the Reseller Control Panel and search for the domain whose SRV records you are modifying.
  2. Click the domain, scroll down to the DNS section, and click Edit.

Step 2: Add the first SRV record

  1. Enter _sipfederationtls._tcp in the subdomain box and click Add subdomain.
  2. Select SRV from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter sipfed.online.lync.com as the hostname, with priority/weight/port values of 100 / 1 / 5061.

Step 3: Add the second SRV record

  1. Add a subdomain of _sip._tls.
  2. Select SRV from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter sipdir.online.lync.com as the hostname, with priority/weight/port values of 100 / 1 / 443.

Step 4: Save the records

  1. Click Save DNS settings at the lower right to save the configuration.
  2. Confirm that both SRV records appear in the zone with the values you entered.

Unsupported nameservers for SRV records

SRV records are not supported on all nameservers.

Warning: SRV records are not supported on the Storefront nameservers ns1.shopco.com and ns2.shopco.com. If you use these nameservers, import the domains from Storefront into the reseller account first.

Note: The nameservers ns1.mdnsservice.com and ns2.mdnsservice.com are deprecated and do not support SRV records.
