You can read and send mail from your OpenSRS mailbox using any standard email program — Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail, the Windows Mail app, and others. This guide gives you the server settings and port numbers you'll need to plug into your chosen email client.
How email clients connect to your mailbox
Email clients connect using IMAP or POP to receive mail, and SMTP to send mail. IMAP keeps your inbox, folders, and read status synchronized across every device, so what you do on your laptop shows up on your phone too. POP downloads messages to one device. For most people, IMAP is the better choice.
Your mailbox lives on one of two server clusters — Cluster A or Cluster B. The cluster determines the hostname you use. If you're not sure which one you're on, check the welcome email from your email provider or contact them.
Before you begin
- Your full email address (this is your username)
- Your email password
- The cluster your mailbox is on (A or B)
- An email client installed on your computer or phone
Server settings for Cluster A
Setting | Value |
|---|---|
Username | your full email address |
Password | your email password |
IMAP / POP / SMTP hostname | mail.hostedemail.com or mail.emailhome.com |
Server settings for Cluster B
Setting | Value |
|---|---|
Username | your full email address |
Password | your email password |
IMAP / POP / SMTP hostname | mail.b.hostedemail.com or mail.mailconfig.net |
Port numbers
These port numbers apply to both clusters. SSL is strongly recommended because it encrypts your login and messages in transit.
Protocol | SSL enabled | SSL disabled | TLS |
|---|---|---|---|
IMAP | 993 | 143 | n/a |
POP3 | 995 | 110 | n/a |
SMTP | 465 | n/a | 587 |
Note: Some networks and ISPs block port 25. If you can receive mail but can't send, switch your outgoing port to 587 (TLS) or 465 (SSL).
Setting up popular email clients
Plug the settings above into your client of choice. Each vendor maintains their own setup walkthrough:
- Mozilla Thunderbird
- Windows 10 Mail
- Microsoft Outlook
- iPhone and iPad
- Apple Mail (Mac)
- Gmail — receiving mail from other accounts
- Gmail — sending from other accounts
- Android (Gmail app)
Tip: If a third-party client won't accept the settings above, that's typically a question for the client's own support team. OpenSRS Support can confirm the settings are correct, but we can't troubleshoot inside third-party software.
Troubleshooting
- Login fails. Make sure your username is the full email address, not just the part before the @. Reset your password in webmail if you're unsure.
- Receives but won't send. Outgoing settings (SMTP) need authentication enabled. Try port 587 (TLS) or 465 (SSL).
- Connection times out. Confirm the hostname matches your cluster and that SSL is enabled where required.
Next steps
